"Down to a Sunless Sea" by Neil Gaiman

Appeared in The Guardian

A woman tells narrator of her son who wanted to be a sailor. When the ship went down, the sailors draw lots and her son gets the short straw of being the main course. Although as a group they tell her the boy went down, one sailor--someone who knew her in the past--tells the truth. So she tells the truth.
